Some people strive to provide themselves with the comfort of sleep and lie down as they like, if desired, while at least settling their feet to the head of the bed. Other people at the same time complain and clap their hands, indicating that they should go to bed according to certain rules.
In particular, any grandmother will prophesy a person who gets caught in the wrong dream a lot of troubles, if it turns out that the person laid his feet against the door.
It’s not difficult to explain why troublegivers are prophesying to the door. For superstitious people, this factor is enough. In the beliefs of many nations, doors, even interior doors, symbolize the transition to another world, the gate. Uneducated peoples believed that the soul could go through the door and not go back.
Moreover, the outside world, the one that is outside the door of the house, was perceived in the past as much more hostile. Indeed, there were much more dangers around, especially with the onset of night, when it was getting dark around, night predators became more active. Behind the door, wildlife began, a world barely touched by man, which was also inhabited by various spirits, also invented by superstitious people.
Exit from the house at night could be equated to a feat, people clearly felt this transition from heat and satiety, the hearth and the circle of loved ones into someone else's cold space. People had a completely different psychology and a different vision of the world, from which we received echoes of beliefs.
The ancient Scandinavians even believed that the lower world of dark spirits and monsters could sometimes communicate with the usual door from the house - especially at night. And these same monsters, according to the ancients, could drag away not only the soul, but the whole person, just by the legs.
Superstition and Modernity
Although especially sensitive and impressionable people are not only echoes of hoary antiquity. Psychologists have noted an increased level of anxiety and poor sleep in sensitive people who put the bed so that they sleep with their feet to the door. At the same time, the feeling of security is lost, the person becomes more restless, the quality of sleep decreases. And in the end, this may well negatively affect health. Those who have keen hearing have a keen perception of the world, it is really better to remove the bed from the door and choose the most secure place to place it. The open door brings even more problems for the psyche of the sleeping person, the feeling of insecurity is amplified, fears and heavy dreams may arise.
The Feng Shui system explains the same thing. From ancient times, the Chinese have noted that in this position of the body one will have to forget about a healthy sleep, and in the morning unpleasant fatigue will wait. In ancient times, they talked about the negative energy of the sha, and today - about human psychology and a sense of insecurity at those moments when the body remains helpless, in need of rest.
Not at the door, so at the window
A similar origin is believed to be related to the prohibition of head-to-window sleep. After all, a window is another hole in secure walls, another shortest path connecting the warm and settled world inside the house with a wild, dangerous world around where not only wild animals can live.
Yogis have a slightly different opinion on this matter - they are forbidden to sleep by the window only if it faces north or north-west. It is believed that these directions draw energy from a person during sleep and prevent him from fully recovering. If the windows open in other directions, then you can even sleep near them.
Feng Shui prohibits sleeping near windows in any case, promising, like with doors, loss of vitality, poor sleep, problems at work that are caused by lack of sleep and poor quality of sleep. And in principle, this has its own share of truth. If you constantly sleep by the window, especially ajar or purged, you can get chronic malaise, constantly get sick, which is unlikely to add happiness to life.
Lanterns outside the windows or moonlight, which is considered especially unhealthy on the full moon, may be disturbing. Also, sleep can disturb the noise coming from the window. A person does not get enough sleep, something constantly worries him, health problems appear, he cannot concentrate his attention for a long time. And the ancient belief justifies itself.
Each person has the right to decide independently how and where to sleep. Many people, on the contrary, tend to sleep by the window, because they feel comfortable in the cool and with a constant flow of fresh air. And others sleep with their feet to the door, even with the door open, in order to be able to control the situation in the neighboring nursery, and to see everything that is happening, barely opening their eyes, for example.
